everybody says that they're doing it, but, like, people don't really do it. Like, go and speak to customers. Like, really speak to customers. Doesn't really help if you're just, like, observing what customer super person is doing and then you're trying to translate that or somebody is talking to the customers and they're reading notes and all this stuff. Yes. It's somewhat useful. But, like, in the end, you have to go in and ask hard questions from your customers or potential customers.
About this clip
Martin Sokk argues that most founders aren't really talking to customers despite claiming they do. He emphasizes that secondhand customer insights through intermediaries or notes aren't enough - founders must directly engage with customers and ask hard questions themselves to get genuine insights.
Why this clip
This challenges the common assumption that founders are already doing customer discovery well, calling out a fundamental gap between what people say they do versus what they actually do.
