AI, Infra vs Apps & Spotting Red Herrings with Akash Bajwa, Principal @ Earlybird

Riding UnicornsOct 8, 202546 min

Akash Bajwa from Earlybird VC cuts through the AI investment hype to reveal why application-layer companies are poised to dominate the next wave, while infrastructure plays face acquisition pressure rather than IPO trajectories. His framework for evaluating AI founders emphasizes technical depth over buzzword fluency, arguing that the best CTOs actively consume research papers and can bridge cutting-edge developments with practical implementation.

Key takeaways

  • Vector database hype created a dangerous investment trap as the infrastructure layer became oversaturated with similar solutions.
  • AI application companies will outperform infrastructure investments because they fundamentally change both backend systems and user experiences.
  • Top AI CTOs must actively read research papers and stay current with developments like DeepSeek's efficient small language models, not just focus on coding.
  • AI security startups are increasingly getting acquired rather than going public, signaling consolidation pressure in infrastructure categories.
  • AI models have finally matured enough to create genuinely new user experiences, evidenced by increasing session lengths across AI applications.

Why the vector database hype was a dangerous trap for investors

you can still build amazing companies. So can you just talk us through a little bit your view on on how infrastructure and application are playing out when you're looking at AI?

Yeah. I think the very tricky thing is to make really generalizable comments about both layers. So if I start with infrastructure, one category that was very hot two, three year years ago was vector databases. And at the time, it was obvious because of where we were in the cycle that all of the pure play vector databases were gonna see incredible growth. And it would have been easy at the time to extrapolate that growth into the future with, like, really bullish assumptions.
